Expert Tom Henderson confirms the upcoming PS5 model as ‘gen 2’ of the original, with optimized production and shipping efficiency
As the PlayStation 5 reaches its third year on the market, with over 30 million units sold worldwide, rumors of a PS5 Pro continue to circulate. Rockstar insider Tez2 has claimed that developers already have dev kits for the rumored upgrade.
Insider Tom Henderson, known for his reporting on the PS5 with a detachable disc drive, took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the matter. According to Henderson, the upcoming PS5 model is not a Pro or Slim version, but rather a “gen 2” of the original PS5. This new model is expected to take over production from the original PS5, which will cease at the end of the year, and will be available for purchase in September after starting production in April. This aligns with previous reports from Insider Gaming.
According to recent reports, an announcement regarding the next iteration of the PlayStation 5 may be made this summer. This follows the trend of Sony’s typical schedule, which includes a State of Play event in June to showcase upcoming major releases.
Insider Tom Henderson has shared further insights on the matter, stating that the upcoming PS5 model will not be a Pro or Slim version but rather a “gen 2” of the original PS5. The cessation of production for the original PS5 and the implementation of the new model is said to reduce costs in production and shipping, as the new model will have a detachable disc drive, allowing for a singular console production.
It should be noted that the new PS5 is expected to have minimal hardware changes, with the detachable disc drive being the main point of difference. This feature, however, will not be compatible with the PS5 Digital Edition and will be sold as a bundle with the new PS5 model. At this time, it does not appear that a Pro or Slim version of the PS5 is in the works.
Sony wouldn't cease production of the "gen 1" PS5 if they had different consoles in production for different price points/specs.
The new PS5 will reduce costs in production and shipping because they can produce just one console; with a detachable disc drive.
